Overtime Rules by Province

Overtime kicks in after 44 hours/week in Ontario, 40 hours in BC and federal workplaces, 44 in Alberta (or 8/day), and 40 in Saskatchewan (or 8-10/day depending on schedule). The standard overtime premium across Canada is 1.5x your regular rate.

BC also pays double time after 12 hours in a single day. Salaried employees can still be overtime-eligible — eligibility depends on your role, not just how you are paid.

Frequently Asked Questions

After how many hours do I get overtime in Ontario?

After 44 hours in a work week, most Ontario employees earn 1.5x their regular rate. Some roles (managers, certain professionals) are exempt.

Is overtime taxed more in Canada?

No — overtime is regular income. More withholding may apply on a big cheque, but any excess comes back as a refund when you file.

Do salaried employees get overtime pay?

Often yes. Unless your role is specifically exempt under your province's employment standards, salary does not remove overtime eligibility.
