GST, HST and PST Rates by Province (2026)

Canada has three sales tax systems: GST-only provinces (Alberta and the territories, 5%), HST provinces (Ontario 13%; Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI and Newfoundland 15%), and GST+PST provinces (BC 12%, Saskatchewan 11%, Manitoba 12%, Quebec 14.975% with QST).

To reverse-calculate: divide the total by (1 + rate). A $113 receipt in Ontario means the pre-tax price was $113 / 1.13 = $100.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reverse-calculate GST/HST from a total?

Divide the tax-included total by 1 plus the rate. In Ontario (13% HST): $113 / 1.13 = $100 pre-tax, $13 tax.

Which provinces have HST in 2026?

Ontario (13%) plus Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI and Newfoundland & Labrador (15%). Other provinces charge GST alone or GST plus a provincial sales tax.

Is GST charged on groceries in Canada?

Basic groceries (milk, bread, produce, meat) are zero-rated. Snack foods, restaurant meals and prepared food are taxable.
