Your pay

Vacation pay rules by province

Vacation pay is a percentage of your gross wages, including overtime and most bonuses. Ontario, BC, Alberta, Manitoba: 4%, 6% after 5 years; Quebec: 4%, 6% after 3 years; Saskatchewan: 5.77% (3 weeks), 7.69% after 10 years; Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI: 4%, 6% after 8 years; Newfoundland and Labrador: 4%, 6% after 15 years; Federal jobs: 4%, 6% after 5 years, 8% after 10.

Employers can pay it each pay cheque, when you take your vacation, or in a lump sum, but it must be paid out when you leave. It's taxed as regular pay; see what you keep with the paycheque calculator. Paid by the hour? Check the overtime pay calculator and stat holiday pay calculator too.

Territories have their own rules. Your employment contract can give more than these minimums, never less.

Frequently asked questions

How is vacation pay calculated in Ontario?

4% of your gross wages for the year if you've worked there under 5 years, 6% from 5 years on. On $50,000 that's $2,000 or $3,000.

Is vacation pay 4% of gross or net pay?

Gross pay: wages before tax and deductions, including overtime. Vacation pay itself is then taxed like regular pay.

Do part-time workers get vacation pay?

Yes. Part-time, casual and student workers earn vacation pay on everything they're paid, at the same percentage.

Do I get vacation pay when I quit?

Yes. Any vacation pay you've earned and not received must be paid out when your job ends, whether you quit or are let go.
