Moving for work or school?

What a move costs, and the tax deduction

Enter your own quotes: movers usually charge by hour or by weight and distance, so get two or three quotes. Fuel is distance × fuel use × price, so a 450 km trip in a truck using 20 L/100 km at $1.55 a litre is about $140.

If you moved for a job, to run a business, or to study full-time, and your new home is at least 40 km closer to your new work or school, you can deduct eligible moving expenses on line 21900. They can only be deducted from income earned at the new location; unused amounts carry forward to next year.

Eligible costs include movers, storage, travel, up to 15 days of temporary lodging, and costs to sell your old home or break a lease. Comparing cities? See the cost of living calculator and Toronto vs Vancouver.
