Why get your refund on every paycheque

Your employer withholds tax as if you had no deductions beyond the basic ones. If you'll claim large deductions like RRSP contributions made on your own, child care or deductible support payments, too much tax comes off all year and you get it back as a refund the following spring.

Form T1213 asks the CRA to authorize your employer to withhold less. The total tax you pay for the year doesn't change; you simply get the money in each pay instead of months later.

We work out the tax saving with the same engine as all our calculators: tax on your employment income, minus tax after your deductions, spread over your pays.

Frequently asked questions

What is form T1213?

A Request to Reduce Tax Deductions at Source. If the CRA approves it, it sends a letter of authority that lets your employer withhold less tax from your pay.

Which deductions qualify for T1213?

Common ones are RRSP contributions not made through payroll, child care expenses, deductible support payments, employment expenses, carrying charges and interest on investment loans, and rental losses.

How long does T1213 take?

The CRA reviews the request and supporting documents first, so apply early in the year. You need to apply again each year.

Does T1213 lower my total tax?

No. You pay the same total tax for the year; you just get the money during the year instead of as a refund.
