How the CCB Is Calculated

The CRA starts with the maximum for each child: $8,157 a year for each child under 6 and $6,883 for each child aged 6 to 17. It then reduces the total based on your adjusted family net income (AFNI).

Below $38,237 of AFNI you get the full amount. Between $38,237 and $82,847 the benefit shrinks by 7% of the income in that range for one child, 13.5% for two, 19% for three and 23% for four or more. Above $82,847 it shrinks more slowly: 3.2%, 5.7%, 8% or 9.5% of the income over that line.

Example: a family with two children (one under 6) and $60,000 of AFNI. Maximum: $15,040. Reduction: 13.5% × ($60,000 − $38,237) = $2,938.01. Benefit: $12,102.00 a year, or $1,008.50 a month. (For reference, the full reduction between the two thresholds for two children is $6,022.35.)

Families caring for a child eligible for the disability tax credit also get the Child Disability Benefit, up to $3,480 per child, reduced above $82,847 of income.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Canada Child Benefit per month?

Up to $679.75 a month for each child under 6 and $573.58 for each child aged 6 to 17, from July 2026 to June 2027. Families with income above $38,237 get less.

When is the CCB paid?

Around the 20th of each month. See the 2026 CCB payment dates.

Is the Canada Child Benefit taxable?

No. The CCB is tax-free and you don't report it as income.

What income is used to calculate the CCB?

Your adjusted family net income from the previous year's tax returns: payments from July 2026 to June 2027 use 2025 income. Both parents must file every year to keep receiving it.

Why was my CCB paid as one lump sum?

If your yearly benefit is $240 or less, the CRA pays it in one payment in July instead of monthly.

Next payment: see the CCB payment dates. Saving for school? Try the RESP calculator. Some provinces add their own child benefit on top of the CCB.
