When CRA pays tax refunds (2026 returns)
The CRA aims to send a notice of assessment and refund about 2 weeks after you file online, and as fast as 8 business days with direct deposit. Paper returns can take up to 12 weeks. A mailed cheque adds about a week.
Online filing for 2026 returns opens in late February 2027. The filing deadline is April 30, 2027 (June 15 if you or your spouse are self-employed). Returns selected for a review take longer; you can follow yours in the progress tracker in CRA My Account.
If your refund comes more than 30 days after the later of April 30 and the day you filed, the CRA adds interest. Find out how big your refund will be with the tax refund calculator.
