The price

How discounts and sales tax work together

Stores take the discount first and charge sales tax on the sale price. 25% off $120 is $90, and with 13% Ontario HST you pay $101.70.

Stacked discounts don't add up: 25% off and then an extra 10% off is a 32.5% total discount, not 35%, because the second one comes off the lower price.

Want the tax on its own? Use the GST/HST calculator or the Ontario HST calculator. Eating out? The tip calculator adds tax and tip.

Frequently asked questions

Is sales tax charged before or after a discount?

After. The discount comes off first, and GST/HST or PST is charged on the lower sale price.

What is 25% off $120 with tax in Ontario?

$90 before tax, $101.70 with 13% HST. You save $30 plus the $3.90 of tax you'd have paid on it.

How do I calculate 20% off plus an extra 10%?

Multiply by 0.8, then by 0.9: the total discount is 28%, not 30%.

How do I calculate a discount percentage?

Divide the amount saved by the original price. $30 off $120 is 30 ÷ 120 = 25%.
