Sales Tax in Ontario (2026)
Ontario has charged 13% HST since July 1, 2010, when it replaced the old 8% retail sales tax (RST) with a single tax combined with the federal GST.
- The 13% is made up of the 5% federal GST and an 8% provincial portion. You pay both as one tax at the till.
- Ontario gives an instant point-of-sale rebate of the 8% provincial portion on some items, so only the 5% GST is charged on them: books, children's clothing and footwear, children's car seats and booster seats, diapers, feminine hygiene products, and prepared food and drinks sold for $4 or less.
- Basic groceries (milk, bread, fresh fruit and vegetables, meat) are zero-rated across Canada, so no HST applies to them.

How to Calculate HST in Ontario
Adding tax: a $1,000 purchase in Ontario carries $50.00 GST and $80.00 HST, for $130.00 in tax and a total of $1,130.00 ($1,000 × 1.13).
Removing tax: a $250.00 receipt that includes tax works out to $250.00 ÷ 1.13 = $221.24 before tax, so the tax paid was $28.76. Don't just take 13% off the total: that gives $217.50 and understates the tax.
