Frequently asked questions
How do I estimate my tax refund from my T4?
Your refund is the income tax your employer deducted (box 22) minus the tax you actually owe, after credits for CPP and EI (boxes 16 and 18) and deductions like union dues (box 44) and RRSP contributions. Drop your T4 above and the reader does the math with the federal and provincial rules for your slip's year (2025 or 2026).
Is it safe to upload my T4?
Nothing is uploaded. Your browser reads the PDF, the amounts never leave your device, and nothing is kept after you close the tab. You can even turn off Wi-Fi after the page loads and it still works.
Where do I get my tax slips as PDFs?
In CRA My Account, open Tax slips and download each slip as a PDF, usually from late February. Many employers and banks also post PDF slips in their payroll or online banking portal.
Why would I get CPP or EI back?
With two or more jobs, each employer deducts CPP and EI as if it were your only job. Anything over the yearly maximum is refunded when you file, and the reader adds it to your estimate.
My slip is a photo or a scan. Will it work?
Not yet: scans and photos don't contain readable text. Use the PDF from CRA My Account, or choose "Type your slips in" and copy the boxes by hand. It takes about a minute.
I live in Quebec. What's different?
Quebec residents file a separate Quebec return, and Quebec tax is shown on the RL-1 slip, not the T4. Your estimate covers the federal return; add RL-1 box E to include Quebec too.
Estimates use the 2025 or 2026 federal and provincial tax rules (matching your slips) from canada.ca. For planning only, not tax advice. The CRA calculates your actual refund.
