What a Notice of Assessment is

After you file, the CRA checks your return and sends a Notice of Assessment (NOA): the tax it calculated, your refund or balance owing, and next year's RRSP deduction limit. If it later changes your return, you get a Notice of Reassessment.

If you disagree with an assessment, you can file a formal objection. The deadline is the later of 90 days after the date on the notice and one year after your return's filing due date.

A balance owing was due on April 30 (also for the self-employed, whose filing deadline is June 15). The CRA charges compound daily interest on any unpaid amount after that date.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Notice of Assessment?

The CRA's summary of your tax return after processing it: what you owe or get back, any changes it made, and your RRSP deduction limit for next year.

What is the difference between an assessment and a reassessment?

An assessment is the CRA's first review of your return. A reassessment changes it later, after you ask for an adjustment or the CRA reviews it, and shows the new result.

How long do I have to object to my assessment?

Until the later of 90 days after the date of the notice or one year after the filing due date of the return.

Where do I find my RRSP deduction limit?

On your latest Notice of Assessment, under RRSP deduction limit, and in CRA My Account.
