How Canadian dividends are taxed
In a non-registered account, Canadian dividends are "grossed up" and then reduced by the dividend tax credit:
- Eligible dividends (most TSX companies): grossed up 38%, federal credit 15.0198% of the grossed-up amount.
- Non-eligible dividends (mostly private companies): grossed up 15%, federal credit 9.0301%.
- Foreign dividends: no gross-up or credit; claim tax withheld as a foreign tax credit.
Dividends in a TFSA or RRSP aren't taxed in Canada, but US dividends in a TFSA lose 15% to US withholding tax. Your province adds its own dividend credit; our free dividend tax calculator includes it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the dividend gross-up in Canada?
Eligible dividends are grossed up by 38% and non-eligible dividends by 15%. You report the grossed-up amount, then claim the dividend tax credit.
Are dividends taxed in a TFSA?
Canadian dividends in a TFSA are tax-free. US dividends still have 15% US tax withheld, which you cannot recover in a TFSA.
Does it work in Google Sheets and on a Mac?
Yes. It is an Excel workbook (.xlsx) that opens in Excel for Windows and Mac, Apple Numbers, and Google Sheets (upload it to Drive, then open with Google Sheets). Formulas recalculate as you type.
