Detailed Walkthrough

Moved for work? Deduct the cost

If you moved at least 40 km closer to a new job, business or full-time school, many moving costs are deductible on line 21900. This free tracker checks the rule, keeps your receipts organized and works out the deduction.

What you can usually deduct

  • Movers, transportation and storage
  • Travel costs: vehicle, meals and lodging on the way
  • Temporary living near either home, up to 15 days
  • Cancelling your old lease, or selling your old home (commissions, legal fees)
  • Legal fees and land transfer tax on the new home, if you sold your old one

The income limit

You can only deduct up to the employment or self-employment income you earned at the new location this year. Anything left over carries forward to next year, and the tracker calculates both.

Target Audience

Who This Template Is For

Anyone who moved for a new job or business
Full-time students who moved for school
People who moved late in the year and need a carry-forward

Frequently asked questions

What is the 40 km rule for moving expenses?

Your new home must be at least 40 km closer (by the shortest normal route) to your new work or school than your old home was.

Can I deduct moving expenses if I moved late in the year?

Yes. If your deduction is more than the income you earned at the new location this year, the rest carries forward to next year.

Does it work in Google Sheets and on a Mac?

Yes. It is an Excel workbook (.xlsx) that opens in Excel for Windows and Mac, Apple Numbers, and Google Sheets (upload it to Drive, then open with Google Sheets). Formulas recalculate as you type.
