Detailed Walkthrough
Get the most from every donation
Donations earn one of the richest credits on your return, but only with an official receipt from a registered charity. This free tracker keeps your receipts organized and shows the credit before you file.
How the donation credit works
Federally, you get 14% on the first $200 you claim and 29% on everything above $200 (33% on the part of your income above $258,482). Your province adds its own credit. Because the first $200 earns the low rate, it often pays to:
Check a charity's registration number on the CRA's list of charities before you give: the tracker has a column for it.
Pool both spouses' donations on one return, so only one $200 is at the low rate.
Carry small donations forward (up to 5 years) and claim them together.

Frequently asked questions
How much tax do I get back on a donation in Canada?
Federally 14% on the first $200 and 29% above that, plus your provincial credit. In Ontario, for example, a $1,000 donation is worth about $360 in combined credits.
Can I carry donations forward?
Yes, for up to 5 years. Grouping small donations into one year gets more of them past the first $200.
Does it work in Google Sheets and on a Mac?
Yes. It is an Excel workbook (.xlsx) that opens in Excel for Windows and Mac, Apple Numbers, and Google Sheets (upload it to Drive, then open with Google Sheets). Formulas recalculate as you type.
