Detailed Walkthrough
Claim every medical expense the CRA allows
The medical expense tax credit is one of the most missed credits in Canada, mostly because receipts are scattered across pharmacies, dentists and insurance claims. This free tracker keeps them in one place and does the threshold math for you.
How the credit works
You can claim eligible medical expenses above a threshold: the lesser of 3% of your net income or $2,890 for 2026. The federal credit is 14% of the amount above the threshold, and your province adds its own credit. Only what you paid yourself counts, so the tracker subtracts insurance reimbursements on every line.
Tips that save more
- You can choose any 12-month period ending in 2026, so pick the 12 months with the most expenses.
- It usually pays for the lower-income spouse to claim the whole family's expenses, because their 3% threshold is lower.
- Private health plan premiums you pay yourself (including your share of a group plan) count.
Expenses for other dependants, like adult children or parents, are worked out separately on line 33199.

Frequently asked questions
What is the medical expense threshold for 2026?
The lesser of 3% of your net income (line 23600) or $2,890. Only the part of your expenses above that amount earns the credit.
Which spouse should claim medical expenses?
Usually the spouse with the lower net income, because 3% of a lower income is a smaller threshold, so more of the expenses count.
Does it work in Google Sheets and on a Mac?
Yes. It is an Excel workbook (.xlsx) that opens in Excel for Windows and Mac, Apple Numbers, and Google Sheets (upload it to Drive, then open with Google Sheets). Formulas recalculate as you type.
