Child care is capped at $8,000 per child under 7 and $5,000 per child aged 7 to 16. Medical expenses count above 3% of your net income or the CRA threshold ($2,890 for 2026), whichever is less. Tuition uses the federal credit. The single-parent (eligible dependant) amount uses the federal credit, assuming your child has no income. Not yet included: the provincial eligible dependant credit, moving expenses and provincial rent or property credits, so your actual refund may be higher.
What's different about a Alberta tax return
Alberta has the highest provincial basic personal amount in Canada ($22,769 in 2026) and, since 2025, a lower 8% bracket on the first $61,200 of taxable income. Both are included in this calculator.
Alberta has no provincial sales tax and no health premium, so there are fewer provincial credits to claim than elsewhere: most of an Alberta refund comes from federal deductions and credits.
See every bracket on the Alberta tax brackets page.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my tax refund in Alberta?
Add your income and the tax already deducted (box 22 of your T4s). The calculator works out the federal and Alberta tax you owe after credits; your refund is the tax deducted minus the tax owed.
How much tax do I pay on $80,000 in Alberta?
About $13,733 of federal and Alberta income tax in 2026, an average rate of 17.2%, before CPP and EI.
How much refund does an RRSP contribution give in Alberta?
Your marginal rate times the contribution: on an $80,000 salary, about $305 for every $1,000.
What is the Alberta tax rate in 2026?
8% on taxable income up to $61,200, then 10%, rising to 15% on income over $370,220. Federal tax comes on top.
Why do Albertans pay less provincial tax?
Alberta's basic personal amount ($22,769) is the highest in Canada, so more income is tax-free, and the provincial rates start lower than most provinces.
When will I get my tax refund?
About 2 weeks after filing online (8 business days with direct deposit), up to 12 weeks on paper. See the tax refund date calculator.
