Child care is capped at $8,000 per child under 7 and $5,000 per child aged 7 to 16. Medical expenses count above 3% of your net income or the CRA threshold ($2,890 for 2026), whichever is less. Tuition uses the federal credit. The single-parent (eligible dependant) amount uses the federal credit, assuming your child has no income. Not yet included: the provincial eligible dependant credit, moving expenses and provincial rent or property credits, so your actual refund may be higher.
What's different about a British Columbia tax return
BC's lowest provincial rate is 5.6% in 2026, and the BC tax reduction lowers provincial tax for lower incomes (included in this calculator).
The BC renter's tax credit (up to $400 a year for eligible renters with lower incomes) is claimed on your return and raises your refund; it isn't in this calculator yet.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my tax refund in British Columbia?
Add your income and the tax already deducted (box 22 of your T4s). The calculator works out the federal and British Columbia tax you owe after credits; your refund is the tax deducted minus the tax owed.
How much tax do I pay on $80,000 in British Columbia?
About $13,274 of federal and British Columbia income tax in 2026, an average rate of 16.6%, before CPP and EI.
How much refund does an RRSP contribution give in British Columbia?
Your marginal rate times the contribution: on an $80,000 salary, about $282 for every $1,000.
How do I get a bigger tax refund in BC?
Claim everything payroll didn't know about: RRSP and FHSA contributions, child care, medical expenses, tuition, donations, and the BC renter's tax credit if you rent and qualify.
Is the BC renter's tax credit included in my refund?
Yes, if you qualify: it's a refundable credit of up to $400 claimed on your return, so it adds to your refund or lowers what you owe.
When will I get my tax refund?
About 2 weeks after filing online (8 business days with direct deposit), up to 12 weeks on paper. See the tax refund date calculator.
