Dependants children and single parents
Children also bring the tax-free Canada Child Benefit, paid monthly and not part of your refund. Estimate your CCB →
Child care is capped at $8,000 per child under 7 and $5,000 per child aged 7 to 16. Medical expenses count above 3% of your net income or the CRA threshold ($2,890 for 2026), whichever is less. Tuition uses the federal credit. The single-parent (eligible dependant) amount uses the federal credit, assuming your child has no income. Not yet included: the provincial eligible dependant credit, moving expenses and provincial rent or property credits, so your actual refund may be higher.
What's different about a Ontario tax return
Ontario's tax includes the Ontario surtax on higher provincial tax and the Ontario Health Premium (up to $900 a year), both deducted from your pay and included in this calculator.
The Ontario Trillium Benefit (energy and property tax credit, sales tax credit, northern energy credit) is applied for on form ON-BEN with your return but paid separately, monthly, so it isn't part of your refund. See the Ontario Trillium Benefit payment dates.
Low-income workers may also get the LIFT credit, which can cut Ontario tax to zero on modest earnings; this calculator doesn't include it yet, so your refund may be higher.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my tax refund in Ontario?
Add your income and the tax already deducted (box 22 of your T4s). The calculator works out the federal and Ontario tax you owe after credits; your refund is the tax deducted minus the tax owed.
How much tax do I pay on $80,000 in Ontario?
About $14,128 of federal and Ontario income tax in 2026, an average rate of 17.7%, before CPP and EI.
How much refund does an RRSP contribution give in Ontario?
Your marginal rate times the contribution: on an $80,000 salary, about $296 for every $1,000.
Why is my Ontario tax refund so small?
Your employer already took off close to the right amount of tax. A refund only comes from deductions and credits payroll didn't know about: RRSP contributions, child care, medical expenses, tuition, donations, or tax taken off a second job.
Is the Ontario Trillium Benefit part of my tax refund?
No. You apply for it on form ON-BEN with your return, but it's paid separately, usually monthly from July.
When will I get my tax refund?
About 2 weeks after filing online (8 business days with direct deposit), up to 12 weeks on paper. See the tax refund date calculator.
