Detailed Walkthrough
Stop being surprised by bills you knew were coming
An emergency fund covers the unexpected. Sinking funds cover the expected: car repairs, holiday gifts, insurance renewals, vacations. This free tracker plans both, so neither one drains the other.
How big should your emergency fund be?
Most planners suggest 3 to 6 months of essential costs: housing, utilities, groceries, transportation, insurance and minimum debt payments. The tracker adds them up, multiplies by the months you choose, and shows how long it takes at your monthly contribution.
Sinking funds
List each future cost with its amount and due date. The sheet works out the monthly amount to set aside and tracks progress as you log deposits.
Where to keep the money: a high-interest savings account or cash in a TFSA keeps it safe and easy to reach. Compare current rates on our free savings and GIC rate pages.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I have in an emergency fund in Canada?
A common target is 3 to 6 months of essential expenses. Choose more if your income is irregular or you are the only earner.
What is a sinking fund?
Money you set aside a little at a time for a cost you know is coming, like car maintenance or holiday gifts, so it doesn't hit one paycheque.
Does it work in Google Sheets and on a Mac?
Yes. It is an Excel workbook (.xlsx) that opens in Excel for Windows and Mac, Apple Numbers, and Google Sheets (upload it to Drive, then open with Google Sheets). Formulas recalculate as you type.
